  Sutton Hoo

Sutton Hoo is one of Britain's most important archaeological sites, ranking in significance with Stonehenge in Wiltshire. The burial ground of the Anglo-Saxon pagan kings of East Anglia, Sutton Hoo is the site of one of the most spectacular archaeological discoveries ever made in this country. It has been called "page one of English history" and archaeological digs have uncovered numerous and now famous treasures.

The Sutton Hoo Estate includes a substantial Edwardian house and 103 hectares (254 acres) of grass-heath, salting and woodland on the Deben estuary, as well as the burial grounds themselves.

Tide Mill - Woodbridge

A mill has stood where the Tide Mill now stands since the twelfth century. The first reference to a mill here occurs in a document dated 1170, giving one Baldwin of Ufford easier access to the building. During the middle ages, the mill was owned by the Augustinian Canons, housed in their Priory in the centre of town. We can be sure that they exercised their 'soke rights', compelling their tenants to send their corn to the mill to be ground and collecting their fixed portion. In 1340, a survey for a tax voted to Edward III valued the tithe of the mill at three shillings per annum.

Orford Ness

12th Century Norman castle

A true Suffolk treasure, Orford has remained mostly unaffected by the 20th Century. The town grew up around a 12th Century Royal castle, of which the surviving 90 ft high Keep dominates the surroundings of Orford to this day.
Henry II built the castle for coastal defences and against invaders from the sea, underlining the political and commercial importance of the area at that time. Orford Ness, recently acquired by the National Trust, is open to visitors on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from Easter until the end of October, with a ferry departing from the Quay at 30 minute intervals. Advance bookings can be made by contacting Orford Ness Ferry on 01394 450057.
